1. Documentary worth watching…
Joseph Campbell was a professor of literature and author, who was well known for his work with comparative mythology. The documentary, Finding Joe, delves into how a hidden pattern that shows up in every story, which he called “the hero’s journey,” is “relevant and essential in today’s world.” Joseph Campbell was known for coining the phrase “follow you bliss.” As we all search for meaning in our lives and strive for a life of significance, it helps to see and reads more that helps us be more conscious of our thoughts and actions. There’s a story in the beginning that I often use in my talks about a Golden Buddha statue. Check it out by ordering the DVD here.
2. Hard work paying off…
You’ve seen this quote in a past Friday’s Findings… “Every master was once a disaster.” I say this often to my kids to remind them that the people they admire, and the people they see doing great things in this world, had to start somewhere. And at some point, those people were terrible at what they now have mastered. So… I’m sharing this clip of my daughter throwing a flip on a wakeboard because she finally landed it this week, after busting her butt (and head), all summer. I love it because she had to work so hard to learn how to do this trick, she took a beating in the process, and she kept trying despite crash after crash after crash. And… while she committed to learning it this summer, and worked at it for weeks, I reminded her that she has been wakeboarding for a decade, building this skill set for a long time. Here is that flip…
3. Wellness tip…
As summer slips by, make sure you are taking moments to take it all in. It’s easy to get consumed by texts, emails, phone calls, and work. As you are driving along, hyper-focused on whatever it is you have your mind on, take a moment and do what I call “pan out.” Take that limited view you have in front of you, which is the car dash, the radio, the speedometer, the car in front of you, etc., and expand your field of vision. Open up your eyes to the vastness and beauty of the sun, the sky, the clouds, and the trees around you. Think of how amazing our universe is, breathe deeply, and really look around. We get consumed by what’s happening directly in front of us, but need to pan out and take in more of what surrounds us each day. Right now, take a break from your computer screen or phone and lift your head up and look around you. If inside, walk outside or to a window, and expand your view… pan out! Look around!
