1. Wellness tip…
As Americans, we eat A LOT of food. One simple strategy to lose weight and be healthier is to consume smaller portions. When we are out to eat, it can be tough to control portions, but at home, one simple step would be to use smaller plates. We tend to fill up our plates, then eat until that plate is clean. Well… roughly 30% more food is eaten if larger portions are present. That leads to a lot of extra calories and a lot of extra body fat. We use smaller plates in our house. Look at how different the same meals look on the smaller and larger plates. A simple, but very effective step in cutting your calories and food portions!
2. Article I read…
The pharmaceutical company Insys Therapeutics, an opioid maker, pleaded guilty last week to federal fraud charges. The company’s founder and four other executives were also convicted “of orchestrating a scheme involving bribes and kickbacks to physicians who prescribed large amounts of the drug to patients who didn’t need it,” according to this article in the USA Today. Fraud? Kickbacks? Bribes? This is how big pharma operates. Do you think these companies sit around in meetings and discuss the best ways to save lives and maximize health and living? NO WAY! The meetings revolve around… how do we make more money??? There never has been, nor ever will be, a drug that will be THE ANSWER to our health and wellness needs.
3. Not-so-wellness tip…
The morning after the last day of school, I left a couple of doughnuts for two of my kids (the third was not home). I share this because, even though doughnuts are ridiculously unhealthy, and a terrible way to start the day, the wellness lifestyle isn’t about deprivation. Following the 80/20 Rule (or 90/10 Rule), you can make mostly healthy food choices. Every now and then, you can have a doughnut, a cookie, or a piece of pizza. And these days, you can find healthier versions of these comfort foods. However… the doughnuts in this pic are definitely not healthier versions!!!
