1. Product I love…
I committed to taking really good care of my teeth years ago. Poor oral health has been linked to other systemic health issues, including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even some cancers. Flossing is a critical part of caring for my teeth. About a year ago, I started using a Waterpik water flosser. I thought it might replace flossing, but it doesn’t, as flossing just seems to do a bit better job of cleaning the teeth where they meet the gum line. However, the Waterpik seems to do a better job at flushing out the gum line and removing debris. After asking several dentists, they all agree that there are benefits to using a water flosser, with some dentists being really excited about it, and others saying they are valuable, but not a replacement for flossing. So… I floss every morning… then brush… then use the Waterpik. I personally don’t think the Waterpik alone is enough, but can say with certainty that even after brushing and flossing, the Waterpik manages to get rid of stuff that is still stuck in my teeth. This was surprising to me, but it’s true. Especially if I’ve eaten nuts, granola, or other foods like those. And with the newer rechargeable and cordless versions, it makes using a Waterpik easy and fast. I keep one at home and one at the office. Click here for info on the Waterpik flosser that I use.
2. Great news I heard this week…
The FDA announced this week that they are moving to phase out ALL petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply. This is HUGE… and long overdue! They also announced a ban on two more artificial colorants. The food dyes have been linked to behavioral and cognitive problems in children. One thing we know FOR SURE… the more natural and pure our food is, the healthier it will be. I expect to see many more positive changes coming that will positively impact our health and the health of our children. See the clip below of FDA commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, making the announcement…
3. Wellness tip…
I say it every spring…GET OUTSIDE! We are meant to bend, lift, twist, carry, shovel, rake, and dig. And we need fresh air and sunshine. WARNING… don’t try to do ALL your yardwork in one day. We see A LOT of patients this time of year because they try to do too much too fast. Do the work… just don’t overdo it. And do outdoor exercise… walk, hike, bike, pickleball, tennis, etc. Our bodies NEED movement!!!
