1. Great (and uplifting) story I heard this week…
We’ve all encountered online scammers. Well… what started out as an apparent online scam in this CBS Evening News story, ends with a surprising twist. Not sure how I came across it, but I’m glad I did. It’s a great story!
2. News story I’ve been following this week…
The train wreck in East Palestine, Ohio, is complex in its ramifications. Being that it happened only 60 miles away from me, I am keeping an eye on what’s being reported, the wind patterns, the possible impact on the water supply, and I am very interested to see what impact this has on the animals in that area as well as animals and wildlife near me. The burning of vinyl chloride creates dioxins, which are severely toxic. As the news, the EPA, the train company, and the politicians downplay the impact this will have on the health of those in that area (and beyond), I have no doubt it will be bigger, more detrimental, and longer lasting, than we will be told. I don’t expend a ton of energy or emotion on things that I cannot change, but I do pay attention, listen, and gather information when things like this happen so that I am aware. This way, I do not get blindsided, I can be somewhat prepared, and I can take appropriate action if necessary. My interest in these toxic dioxins was peaked while reading an article titled, “East Palestine, Ohio train wreck: It’s the dioxin,” by Eric Coppolino. You can read that article by clicking here.
3. Something that really resonated with me this week…
Last night, we watched the movie Mr. Jones, which is set in 1933, where “an ambitious young journalist, Gareth Jones, travels to Moscow to uncover the truth behind Stalin’s Soviet propaganda that pushes their ‘utopia’ to the Western world. When he gets a tip that could expose an international conspiracy, Jones’ life and the lives of his informants are at stake.” It’s based on a true story and is said to be historically factual. (You can watch the trailer by clicking here.) There was a particular scene that really caught my attention. Gareth Jones is talking with another journalist stationed in Moscow, Ada Brooks. She jokingly implies that he may have his own agenda. Here is that dialogue…
Gareth Jones: I don’t have an agenda. Unless you call truth an agenda.
Ada Brooks: Yes, but whose truth?
Gareth Jones: The truth. There is only one kind.
As we have seen censorship and propaganda become rampant in this country these past few years, those words jumped out at me. There is only one kind of truth! The truth is the truth… period! (Thanks for the recommendation, Karol C.!)
