1. Event (and photo) that moved me this week…
I looked up the latest news on the earthquake in Turkey and Syria late last night and read that the death toll was up to 21,000. I couldn’t help but remember how we all felt after the 9/11 attacks (fear, anger, confusion, sadness, frustration, etc.), and that was with losing 2,996 Americans. As I was processing that devastation, I saw a picture that ROCKED ME. It was a man crouched down in front of a huge pile of rubble, holding the hand of his 15-year-old daughter, who died in the earthquake. You can see her hand, but the rest of her is covered in rubble. I was overcome with emotions. First… incredible empathy for this man, whose world is upside down right now. My heart ached for him, my eyes welled up, and I was paralyzed for a moment. Second… immense gratitude for what I have in my life. This is likely the most powerful picture I have EVER SEEN. Coincidentally, one of my daughters arrived home from college just minutes after that, and needless to say, seeing her, and being able to give her a hug, was very meaningful. Thoughts and prayers to the people of Turkey and Syria.
2. Short video I watched this week…
Jesse Itzler, author of Living with a Seal, posted a video (7 years ago) that I just watched. He shares what is called the “40% Rule,” a rule used by Navy Seals to increase mental toughness. When your mind is telling you that you are done, you are really only 40% done. Simply put…we are capable of MUCH, MUCH more than we think we are. Check out the 4-minute video below (and thank you, Suzy M., for sharing!).
3. Quote I love…
“There is always some kid who may be seeing me for the first time. I owe him my best.”
– Joe DiMaggio when asked by a reporter, “Why did you play so hard?”
